Director of Education
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is seeking a Director of Education to join our team. This position is ideal for an Associate Director or Manager with CME and CE experience who is looking to take the next step in their career. The Director has primary responsibility for administration, evaluation, and improvement of AMIA’s educational programs and also oversees educational offerings including annual conferences and e-learning. Given AMIA’s diverse membership of researchers, clinicians and health professionals, the Director helps to identify relevant educational needs, learning objectives, target audiences, teaching methods, requirements, and outcomes for educational activities by working directly with committees and committee chairs, members, and AMIA staff. The Director of Education reports to the Vice President of Education and Academic Affairs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage accreditation and maintenance of certification (MOC) activities to ensure that AMIA meets all requirements through the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and Nursing
- Manage Education Department staff including the Education Program Manager and Education Specialist
- Provide tactical oversight of educational plans that lead the development, synthesis, design and implementation of all of AMIA’s educational programs
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Meetings to support AMIA’s educational offerings to ensure consistent program development, communications, and delivery
- Prepare reports on educational activities to appropriate AMIA staff and leaders
- Serve as the staff liaison to the Education Committee, Scientific Program Committees, Program Planning Committees and other committees as assigned
Required Experience and Skills:
- College degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Five or more years related experience in the education department of a membership association or at a specialty society providing continuing education for health care professionals
- An understanding of educational programming for meetings involving peer review; of developing, administering, and evaluating CME activities and familiarity with CE systems
- Manager-level experience with CME, CE and educational programs for health and medical professionals
- Experience supervising personnel

Marketing and Communications Specialist
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is seeking a Marketing and Communications Specialist to join our team. The Specialist has primary responsibility for writing and editing e-communications and select programmatic communications, and for coordinating with staff to ensure that e-communications, social media and web content is relevant, critical and timely. The Specialist is responsible for trafficking print projects through the production process and setting reasonable deadlines to ensure on-time delivery as well as coordinating project management activities in support of AMIA’s marketing and communications plan. The Specialist will work with members, prospective members, the media and relevant organizations to reinforce AMIA’s messages consistently and to continue to build brand identity for the organization and its programs. This position reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Write, edit and distribute AMIA e-News, e-News Buzz and support specific meeting mini-newsletters for Symposium, Joint Summits and iHealth
- Field online and e-news advertising inquiries; Manage advertising traffic, materials and invoicing
- Provide project management for the production of collateral materials for member services, exhibits, events, corporate sponsorship as assigned
- Actively learn and master skills necessary for use of EMS/CMS technology
- Coordinate with staff to support, maintain and increase AMIA’s social media strategies
- Field press inquiries and support PR distribution efforts through use of online tools
- Seek out and implement use of best practices into marketing and communication process
- Develop the highest member service standards possible in using tools and strategies to respond to inquiries, requests, and comments from members, prospective members, and others
Required Experience and Skills:
- College degree required; Journalism/Communication/English degrees preferred
- Understanding of association marketing and communication functions
- 2-5 years experience with e-marketing and newsletter writing experience
- Outstanding writing, editing and verbal communication skills, AP Style proficiency
- Strong knowledge of social marketing tools
- Experience using InDesign
- Understanding of the use of websites for professional development, the building of online communities, personalization and e-publishing within associations
- Creative self-starter with the ability to manage and oversee multiple projects and work collaboratively with other staff and departments
- Strong MS office skills
- Able to travel occasionally

Membership Development Specialist
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is seeking a Membership Development Specialist to join our team. The Specialist is responsible for coordinating AMIA’s overall membership development plan which includes working with all staff on delivering excellence in member service. The Specialist works with membership and marketing staff to develop a comprehensive individual marketing plan that aligns with AMIA’s priorities. The management and establishment of benchmarks, work plans and schedules to assure continued improvement and excellence is essential. In addition to managing day-to-day recruitment activities, the individual will contribute to high-level, cross-departmental efforts designed to meet AMIA’s strategic objectives including the implementation of a new chapter initiative. The Specialist serves and communicates with several volunteer committees.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate and promote excellence in member service including the development and implementation of strategies for remaining in regular and meaningful contact with members
- Establish schedules for annual membership recruitment and renewal activities and work with staff to ensure that timelines are met
- Develop and manage the long-term strategy for AMIA’s individual member recruitment strategy and review with senior management
- Provide strategic and tactical oversight of annual membership recruitment plans that includes identification of the target audience; development of the collateral materials, exhibits, events, and other activities to promote membership
- Arrange and serve as principal staff representative at outside trade shows in accordance with AMIA’s overall membership strategy
- Contribute member focused items to AMIA’s weekly newsletter
- Develop, implement and manage membership tracking measures and report on such measures regularly to senior management
- Create and administer the membership development budget
- Serve and communicate with the Membership and Outreach Committee
Required Experience and Skills:
- College degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Thorough understanding of association member services and development functions
- Minimum of 5 years of management level experience directing membership recruiting or membership service for a service-driven membership organization
- Competency with database software (NetForum), social media and e-communication tools, and strong MS office skills
- Experience working in a member focused, team-oriented environment
- Able to travel occasionally

Web Design Internship
AMIA offers an opportunity for a programming/web design student or young professional to gain experience with (a) redesigning and improving usability on a website, (b) improving web graphics and HTML/CSS technique on Drupal CMS and Wordpress CMS, and (c) organizing and creating online communication materials such as email templates and online advertisements. The web design/technology intern will improve his or her skills in Drupal 6 website and graphic design, while learning about the inner workings of a professional nonprofit organization. The intern will be supervised by the webmaster.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate workflow operations with the Webmaster to create new web pages such as news releases, resources, and corporate member profile pages with graphics
- Convert PDF materials to HTML pages on Drupal site
- Create images with CS5 for e-news and online communication materials
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements & Skills:
- Excellent computer skills including usage of HTML and CSS, Javascript, PHP programming skills and graphics programs (including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop).
- Advanced knowledge of Drupal and Wordpress, or other comparable web design platforms
- Capability to communicate status and problems clearly and be able to effectively communicate and work within a team environment
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Intuitive research abilities and familiarity with a variety of web-based research tools and resources
The ideal candidate would be an undergraduate with the ability to spend 2-3 days (20 hours a week) a week in our Bethesda, MD office, which is a short walk from the Bethesda metro stop. Duration is 3 months (13 weeks) with the potential to extend once for 13 weeks.
- Small stipend is offered: $500 per month.
- Academic credit can be arranged.
- Hours: 20 hours/week
